Americus Welcomes DG Jim Squire
Anticipating a Great Year and Connecting with Neighboring Cordele Club
It was no ordinary club meeting for Americus Rotarians on August 20! District Governor Jim Squire and his lovely wife Donna were in the house, along with AG Brenda Hodges-Tiller. He began with congratulating our club on its 100 years of exemplary service to the community and its rich history that included four District 6900 Past District Governors and one District 6920 Past District Governor who retired to Americus and remains active in the club. He honored two of our own with a commendations for their years in Rotary - Broadus Willoughby, Rotarian since 1955 and Dr. Jim Herron, Rotarian since 1970.
DG Jim's theme for the District this year is "Connect with Rotary" and is the essence of the Rotary International theme "Rotary Connects the World". As such, he challenged members to 1) Connect the members in our clubs in fellowship, 2) Connect the citizens of our community in service, 3) Connect the clubs in our District in collaboration and support of District-wide initiatives, and finally, 4) Connect the world in compassion. Out of Rotary's six areas of focus, DG Jim announced Basic Education and Literacy as the focus he asked the club to support in the coming year and was pleased to learn that Americus Rotary's District Grant project involved purchasing Chromebook computers to be used for educational purposes for the Carter Unit of the Boys and Girls Club in Plains, GA.
Topping off the DG visit was a joint dinner at the Lakeshore Grill at Lake Blackshear attended by members of the Americus and Cordele clubs. These two neighboring clubs make this an annual event and use the opportunity to connect with one another in fun and fellowship. By the way, it just so happens that the Presidents of each of the two clubs share a family connection. President Rene Smith (Americus) and President Lauren Fletcher (Cordele) are cousins making this annual dinner a true Family of Rotary event!
