Every third Saturday of the month, Rotarians partner with other volunteers in Plains, GA to distribute food from Second Harvest, serving families in need and who live in what has been identified as a food desert. The distribution includes fresh fruits and vegetables, making healthy items available. These items are often considered more expensive than fast food and food loaded with preservatives. It is hoped that by making these items more accessible, that it will make for a healthier population in these rural areas with a high poverty rate.
Americus Rotary pledged to have 4 volunteers at each month's distribution. There are 250 boxes unloaded and distributed each month to families.
